The S2 Cup is an amateur racing series that provides a fun
and competitive environment for racing Sports 2000 racecars on the
West Coast. The series was started and continues to be operated and
supported by Sports 2000 drivers.
Fun racing is achieved by having races at interesting tracks
along the West Coast and by not introducing any administrative hassle
to interfere with the racing. Competition is achieved through large
fields of S2 cars competing towards a clear year-end goal. The
S2 Cup is a friendly series for weekend racers looking for a fast and fun
way to race safely.
Each S2 Cup Series consists of a set of specially designated
SCCA Club races, determined at the start of the calendar year.
Points earned at each race are applied to the S2 Cup
Championship.
A core tenant of the S2 Cup is that administrative issues are kept to an absolute minimum, deferring to SCCA Club Racing whenever possible. There are no administrative costs passed onto competitors. Coordination of the series is performed by volunteers voted upon by the competitors. The risk of ruling by committee is preferable to the risk of a bureaucracy that does not represent the desires of the drivers.
Driver input is solicited through the use of an on-line discussion on the series' website, along with verbal and written communication.
At the end of each calendar year, the competitors nominate races for the upcoming calendar. The nominated races are added to a schedule ballot and each driver who raced in at least two S2 Cup race weekends in the previous season can vote for the races they want on the next year's schedule. From there the S2 Cup schedule is determined. Guidelines for race selection are:
- Approximately 6-8 race weekends per year
- Track variety
- National races over regionals
- Fair geographical distribution
- Reasonable distribution of races throughout the year
The West Coast S2 Cup spans from Phoenix to Portland, including the Southern Pacific and Northern Pacific Divisions of the SCCA.
Each year, an attempt is made to include the most prestigious races from each region with as much track diversity as possible and an even distribution of races across the geography.
